Pedestrian Detection System

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation’s (ODOT’s) Multi-Modal Division, in coordination with the City of Mustang, has temporarily installed a pedestrian and vehicle detection camera system at the intersection of Morrell Way and Mustang Road.  The system is being used as part of a multimodal traffic study to better understand how vehicles and pedestrians move through the intersection.  ODOT plans to keep it at that location for several months, collecting data.  The cameras collect traffic movement data such as vehicle turning movements, traffic volumes, pedestrian crossings, and general activity at the intersection.  This information will help transportation planners and engineers evaluate how the intersection currently operates and identify potential improvements that could enhance traffic flow and pedestrian safety in the future.  The equipment being used for this study does not record personal identifying information and is not used for law enforcement purposes.  The system simply tracks movement patterns and counts vehicles and pedestrians to assist with traffic safety analysis. Questions related to the equipment can be directed to ODOT’s Active Transportation Coordinator, Bart Vleugels, at bvleugels@odot.org.

FAQs-

  • Is the camera system used for issuing tickets?
No.  The cameras are not connected to law enforcement and do not issue tickets.

  • Can the cameras identify drivers or read license plates?
No.  The system is designed to analyze traffic movement patterns and counts.  It does not identify individuals or collect personal information.

  • Is someone watching the cameras all day?
No.  The cameras automatically collect traffic data and analyze movement patterns using software.  There isn’t anyone sitting in a control room watching the intersection.

  • Why is this study being done?
Morrell Way and Mustang Road serve both vehicle traffic and pedestrians accessing Wild Horse Park.  Understanding how these different users interact helps engineers identify improvements that could make the intersection safer and more efficient.

  • How long will the cameras be installed?

The plan is for the equipment to remain in place for several months, until sufficient data have been collected for the study.
