Beginning the week of May 28, 2018 through September 7, 2018, an Alternative Work Schedule will be implemented for all full-time employees not currently included in one of the two collective bargaining groups (Fraternal Order of Police and International Association of Fire Fighters).  The departments and/or services that will be impacted by the Alternative Work Schedule are as follows:

Library - Administration Parks and Recreation – Administration and Facility Maintenance Police – Administration and Records Division Fire – Administration Community Development – Administration, Code Enforcement and Building Inspections Finance – Administration, Utility Billing and Court Managerial – Administration, Human Resources and City Clerk’s Office

The Alternative Work Schedule for these employees during the described period will be as follows:  Monday through Thursday – 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM, Friday – 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM.

The Operational Hours for the public will be as follows:  Monday through Thursday - 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM, Friday 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM.

The proposed schedule was recently implemented by the City of Edmond and has also been successfully implemented in other communities such as Carrollton, Corinth, and Lewisville, TX and Derby, KS.  Identified benefits of the Alternative Work Schedule are as follows:

  • Added level of customer service by being open 1/2 hour before and 1/2 hour after regular business hours to accommodate customer schedules Mondays through Thursdays.
  • Friday afternoons off.
  • Employee flexibility and morale.
  • Employee recruitment by adapting to a changing workforce.

While City Hall and the various administrative offices would open/close at new times, current operating hours of the Library and Recreation Center would be unaffected.  Both Police and Fire Departments already utilize an Alternative Work Schedule.  Police Officers and Emergency Communications utilize 12 hour shifts while Fire Fighters utilize 24 hour shifts.

Staff will perform a review of the Alternative Work Schedule upon its completion before determining whether to continue the program next summer or on a permanent basis moving forward beginning January 1, 2019.  Notifications to utility billing customers of the Alternative Work Schedule will begin in April and information will be included on the City’s website regularly.  If you have any questions regarding the Alternative Work Schedule, please contact the City Manager's Office.
