The City of Mustang provides a "Spotlight Employee" each month so that citizens can learn more about the public servants that contribute to our City running smoothly. The Spotlight Employee will feature answers to a series of questions about the selected employee, the department and position they serve in, and unique likes and interests of the employee.
The August 2026 Spotlight Employee is Andy Willrath of the Fire Department.
How long have you worked for the City of Mustang? I became a volunteer firefighter in October, 1995 while working at UPS. I made the decision to accept a full-time position in January of 2003. .
Where were you born? (Hospital is not a permitted answer) Whittier, California.
Where do you live and how long have you lived there? I have lived in Mustang since 1995. But prior to that I lived in Yukon since the 70's.
Are you married? Do you have any children? Yes I am, and we just celebrated our 19th anniversary. I have 2 boys.
What do you enjoy the most about working for the City of Mustang? As a fireman, I really enjoy being out in the public. I get to see and talk to a lot of people and I think I get to help them out during stressful times of their lives. As a City of Mustang employee, I enjoy the relationships I have to each of the other city departments and organizations. I'm married to a Mustang employee and I never know if I'll run into the Mayor on a call, chat with one of the police officers after a difficult call, or have the City Manager drop off a cheesecake on a holiday.
What project have you most enjoyed being a part of while working for the City of Mustang? I've been a part of quite a few projects. I think yearly it is our Fire Prevention Program which we get to go to all the Mustang Elementary Schools and do our shows. We have a core group of firefighters that really get involved and equal the energy of the children.
Favorite Food? By far its pizza.
Favorite Recording Artist or Author? Pearl Jam....but when my playlist is on shuffle, there is no telling what might play between Elvis songs.
Do you have a secret skill or talent? I enjoy oil painting.
What is the biggest misconception about being a firefighter? Is that we sit around waiting on the next call. We spend a great portion of the day fire training, performing maintenance, and completing EMS training. The MFD has a great reputation for our EMS skills and we train to maintain that reputation.
