At last night's regular meeting of the City Council, members of the Mustang Fire Department were presented with Life Saving Awards as a result of action taken on the morning of January 20, 2026. A Mustang resident, Mr. Mike Mason, after visiting the Fire Department regarding an unrelated issue, became unresponsive and started convulsing. A cardiac monitor revealed that Mr. Mason had gone into ventricular fibrillation. CPR was initiated immediately and AED pads were applied. After one round of continuous CPR, Mr. Mason remained in V-fib, and a defibrillation shock was delivered. Mr. Mason then became responsive and was transported for to Baptist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
The Life Saving Award recognizes members who, through professional skill, decisive action, and a commitment to preserving human life, directly contribute to the successful resuscitation of a human life. The action taken by Lt. Bryon Smith, Cpl. Jake Montgomery, and Firefighter Mason Piatt reflect the highest standards of the Mustang Fire Department. Mr. Mason was on hand to present the awards, as was Mustang Fire Chief Craig Carruth.
