The City of Mustang provides a " Spotlight Employee" each month so that citizens can learn more about the public servants that contribute to our City running smoothly. The Spotlight Employee will feature answers to a series of questions about the selected employee, the department and position they serve in, and unique likes and interests of the employee.
The May 2026 Spotlight Employee is Michelle Ferguson of the Library Department.
How long have you worked for the City of Mustang? I have worked for the City of Mustang for a year and a half. Hard to believe since it has gone by so fast.
Where were you born? (Hospital is not a permitted answer) I was born in Colorado but somehow became a prairie dweller 15 years ago..
Where do you live and how long have you lived there? I have lived in Piedmont for 15 years.
Are you married? Do you have any children? I am a single empty-nester with a collegiate fledgling at OSU. Go Pokes! .
What do you enjoy the most about working for the City of Mustang? I love the staff in Mustang. The library folks have taken me into the fold and it's a wonderful place to be.
What project have you most enjoyed being a part of while working for the City of Mustang? I am most proud of the children's nonfiction section. We have been working on making it more comfortable for browsing. We have done away with the Dewey Decimal System in that area so that we could implement more of a bookstore model, with pictures indicating the genres so that children can find what they're looking for more easily. Decimal points are no fun for any age, young or librarian, so shelving is much easier as well.
Favorite Food? I love smoked salmon.
Favorite Recording Artist? Dave Matthews Band...and not that they are related, but eating fish while listening to Big Eyed Fish seems to correlate.
Who is your favorite author? Do people only pick one? I love Conroy and Backman best; one is alive, the other is not, so I'm leaning heavily on Blackman...the only one of the two that I can count on for new reading material.
Do you have a secret skill or talent? I can secretly draw, paint, and mess around on a guitar.
As a Youth Librarian, what do you feel is your greatest challenge? How does increasing access to technology assist or hamper that challenge? As a Youth Librarian, the challenge is pulling kids from screens and putting written material into their hands that is strong enough to hold their attention. It requires lots of pictures and descriptive verbiage, but doggonit, graphic novels are literature, too, and since that is what it takes to fight the internet, we'll keep putting more on the shelves. Go Reading!
