At yesterday's annual convention of the American Legion Department of Oklahoma, the City of Mustang received a Special Appreciation Award for its continued commitment to patriotism as a community through the "Avenue of Flags", Memorial and Veterans Day ceremonies, and its renowned Independence Day celebrations. The award and certificate of appreciation were presented by Oklahoma Department Commander Hayden Woods and Award Chairman and Mustang resident Paul Ray. We thank Mustang American Legion Post #353 for the nomination and thank all Veterans for their service. It was truly an honor and humbling to accept these awards and be recognized for this honor.

At Tuesday evening's City Council meeting, Mustang Library Youth Service Instructor Sheila Barnard received the Non-Uniformed Employee of the Year award from the Mustang American Legion Post #353. Sheila created a year-round Teen Volunteer Program. The volunteers help at each program the library offers. She is helping teens prepare for the workforce by teaching them about job readiness. This program is a well-oiled machine. The teens know expectations and need little direction once trained. Sheila definitely dreams big and pushes us to help these dreams become a reality. Our newish Teen Space came about because of Sheila. She was adamant that teens needed a space of their own in the library to feel comfortable in and she was correct. Our Teen Space is often filled with teens hanging out, studying, reading, playing games, using computers, etc. Sheila is also the social media content coordinator for the Library. Congratulations!! Pictured from left to right are Library Director Julie Slupe, Youth Services Instructor Sheila Barnard, and Commander Barry Carrington.
